Environment agency investigations in response to bathing water sites
In response to the designation of bathing water sites that was undertaken by Friends of the Dart and our communities Stoke Gabriel has now been downgraded to poor bathing water quality. This is a result of several high sample readings after tests taken by the Environment agency for ecoli and enterrococci bacteria. We recognise the challenge this downgrade may pose to businesses who rely on contact with the river and we continue to work closely with this network of River friends. The poor rating has the desired effect of highlighting issues, the Environment agency is now engaged in detailed investigations and creating a plan of action to resolve issues using enforcement measures with polluters. In the longer term we anticipate that this will mean better water quality at both Steamer quay and Stoke Gabriel, both now rated poor. These sites will now be prioritised for resolution of pollution issues. This is a huge win for our River and river communities in the longer term. Having more detailed testing also means that you will have more information about how to keep yourselves and visitors safe. We are looking into ways that we can further support businesses and events on the river as this transition happens. The downgrading at this site does not necessarily mean that the water quality is worse only that it is being monitored more effectively. By creating transparency we can together achieve real change for the long term health of our river eco system.
We continue to work closely with the Environment agency in co-led walkovers this winter and this has resulted in the identification and resolution of issues in multiple locations. Read the full report here.
